Flirty Friday – Vintage Halloween Costumes, Accessories and Collectables

Hello Friday Flirts – bit late today – we been distracted by the Halloween flurry and are not getting round to much flirting!

Thought we’d share some recent Halloween themed Vintage Finds from some of our favourite sites…

Vintage Halloween Postcards

The more we read, the more we realise Vintage Halloween postcards are quite collectable and worth a tidy little sum in mint condition. We do like collecting postcards, so here’s some of our favourites from Old Postcards

Through 30 years of travel they have acquired over 3 million vintage postcards in numerous categories, from Art Nouveau to Make-Up to Wrestling.

We’ve not yet used them ourselves, but they do ship worldwide – definitely worth a look!

The Man With The Golden Arm (1955) – Film Review

A must see film from the 1950’s! “The Man With The Golden Arm” (1955) – Starring Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak and Eleanor Parker, Produced and Directed by Otto Preminger.

Man with the Golden Arm

Man with the Golden Arm

Frank Sinatra stars as Franky Machine, a.k.a ‘Dealer’, a.k.a ‘The man with the golden arm’, back room poker legend and recovering heroin addict. It’s 6 months after getting arrested and going through rehab and Franky returns home with a fresh attitude, a new musical passion and a chance to rebuild his life, but in the classic scenario his old life and habits are where he left them and ready to drag him back down.

This film is dirty and hard; heroin addiction, illegal gambling, alcoholics, poverty, psychological games, murder, and all shot through with great acting and dialogue, and a great jazz soundtrack (Elmer Bernstein/Shorty Rodgers & his Giants). At times it feels like a film with a message, but Sinatra shows great acting talent and realism. There are also great moments from Eleanor Parker, Franky’s neurotic, wheel-chair bound wife, and Kim Novak, the beautiful girl downstairs, and I can’t forget ‘Sparrow’ my favourite character.

Watch this film if you want to see the original Trainspotting, but the jazz version set in the post-war depression, or if you want to see if Sinatra can do more in a film than just sing a memorable tune (even if he can’t play the drums!)

Flirty Friday – DIY Vintage: 1970’s Style Tunic

Happy Friday Vintage lovers everywhere!

We’re currently chilling out with Stan/Adam and Jamie in the lovely city of Bristol but we couldn’t let this Friday pass without mentioning the georgous Gianny L and posting her DIY Vintage 1970’s Style Tunic clip.

A simple way to use up those odd bits of vintage material you fell in love with, but haven’t worked out how to use yet. Love the cheeky music too.

Check out her blog for more interesting DIY projects such as recylcing old lightbulbs into a vase

Anyone have any more DIY Vintage projects to recommend for the rainy days in?

From 2 Tone to the Birth of Cool – Bad Boys in Suits

I am not a suit wearer. I’d go so far as saying I shun the option of a shirt and tie at almost every opportunity, or else the job interview/wedding/funeral needs to be a pretty big deal before I iron my collar and cuffs (pun intended).

Rat Pack

Rat Pack

My aversion probably stems from the cliche school uniform hatred – how many times was I lectured on the fact that in the real world “people wear suits to work” and that “you’ll need pride in your appearance for anyone to take you seriously!”

My heroes have always been misfits and free thinkers and well, bad boys (and girls). Now I’m a grown up (ha!) and experiencing this ‘real world’ that has options for laid back scruffy men with a lack of fashion knowledge such as myself, I’m also experiencing an expendable income and with it the freedom of fashion and style.

2Tone ep front

When confronted with the option of dressing, or should I say presenting myself, as my heroes have, the thing that links them in most cases…is the suit!

In this series, I’ll be looking at the suit in its many modern cultural guises, from the political/social statement of 2 Tone, to the sometimes shady businessmen of the Rat Pack era, to the birth of cool Jazz era when the mainstream style hid a multitude of sins…

How to do Vintage Guest Writers – Bad Boys in Suits

We’re very excited to be introducing a few new guest writers to How to do Vintage.

Fat Albert on influence of music on fashion, Richard and his trip to Goodwood Revival with some excellent pictures of the day’s fashion and vintage cars and David on his lovingly restored VW Beetle.

First up will be Fat Albert (he’s shy) writing  ‘From 2 Tone to the birth of cool – Bad boys in suits‘ which will look at music and the influence on mens fashion – namely the suit – from the 1980’s right back to the 1930’s.

We love boys in suits, we love music and we quite like bad boys, so this is going to be a great series…

So, bad boys in suits (and girls) – Enjoy!

Flirty Friday – The Puppini Sisters are on tour!

With some brilliant voices and strong 1940’s style harmonies – the Puppini Sisters were a brilliant find!

We first heard them on their album ‘Betcha Bottom Dollar’ which includes great arrangements of classics such as Pat Ballard’s Mr. Sandman, originally recorded by The Chordettes in 1954. It also includes one of our favourites ‘Jeepers Creepers’, originally written by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer and premiered by Louis Armstrong in the 1938 film Going Places.

We finally get to see them live, as they are touring the UK.

Check out ‘Millionaire’ from their new album The Rise and Fall of Ruby Woo…love the line ‘Look for my Limousine, once more its not there.’ …always seem have that problem of a morning…!

What to wear to a 1950’s Swing Night?

Katy Jo from How to do Vintage is off to a Swing Night!

Old Finsbury Town Hall

Old Finsbury Town Hall

Oooo-er we hear you say…but we’ll be swinging from partner to partner when we’re dancing at this party! Its going to be a 1950’s swing themed party, with a promised big band and some jazz and be-bop. Our dancing shoes are at the ready…

Its in London UK at The Old Finsbury Town Hall, what a beautiful venue!

The anticipation is upon us…but now the dilema on what to wear…any ideas?

We’re thinking classic 1950’s prom dress…would this be right? And what about accessories?

We want to impress with our dress (as our dancing skills leave a little to be desired…) Vintage Queens everywhere, advice much appreciated!

Citroen DS Vintage Car - Great Escape Classic Car Hire

Citroen DS Vintage Car - Great Escape Classic Car Hire

We’ve found one you can hire from Great Escape Classic Car Hire in Worcestershire – UK.

This one may be more suited to a wedding or romantic picnic and we doubt they’d appreciate you driving it in National Lampoons style, but what a great find!

In fact you can hire many different vintage cars and they look stunning – we’ll be taking a closer look later this week…
